ROCNA Debuts non roll-bar Anchor Design – VULCAN®

Building on the huge success and performance of the Rocna anchor, thenew design from Rocna Anchors is forged from the heritage of the Rocna itself and the demands of innovation. The Vulcan® offers the greatest possible compatibility across a wide range of vessel bow configurations, particularly powerboats with an enclosed bow roller assembly. The Vulcan® made its official debut at the Marine Equipment Trade Show (METS) this year.

Rocna Anchors designer, New Zealand sailor Peter Smith, has been designing, building and sailing boats since the early 1960s and experienced the same anchoring problems that are still prevalent today – unreliable anchors that make boaters feel insecure. "Your anchor should provide you and your crew with reliability, security and confidence," said Smith. A lifetime of nautical experience worldwide was poured into an anchor, initially conceived for Smith's own use, which became the original Rocna.

Despite the great success of the Rocna, some boat owners have difficulties accommodating the roll-bar that is fundamental to its design on their bow.

Vulcan® is an ideal alternative for these boaters, since the omission of a roll-bar combined with a carefully designed shank profile ensures a snug fit on the bows of a range of vessels. Platforms, bowsprits, prods, stays, and other protrusions are easily cleared. The shank shape also encourages self-launching and smooth retrieval on a majority of bow rollers, ensuring ease of use for all operators.

The new anchor design features a unique combination of shank and fluke geometry, which in conjunction with a roll-palm™ at the rear of the fluke, self-rights the anchor on the seabed without the use of either a roll-bar or a large mass of inefficient tip ballast. This development enables a larger fluke surface area than other designs, which rely on dedicated tip weight, directly equating to more holding power and security on a weight-for-weight basis.

Shank strength is heightened by a unique I+V profile™ design, granting improved resistance to bending courtesy of a computer optimized I-beam geometry. This innovation also improves setting performance, with the lower V edge cutting into the seabed and minimizing resistance to a deep and secure burial.

Available in hot-dip galvanized steel or polished stainless steel and finished with the utmost attention to detail and quality, the new anchor is available for vessels in an extensive range of sizes from 4 kg (9 lb.) to 55 kg (121 lb.) And like the Rocna, it features a lifetime warranty against breakage and bending.
